Finding Balance

It’s official

We have a house. We were having some misgivings about the first one we put an application in on, partly because of the size but mainly because our future landlord was a little hard to catch up with. As a backup, we looked at a few other houses and found one we really liked. Bigger, nicer house, not as nice neighborhood, but cheaper rent also. We had to do some negotiating to get the landlord to accept our pets, but he is a very conscientious person and has been true to his word on everything so far. We were supposed to make arrangements to meet with the previous guy this past Wednesday to sign a lease, and never heard from him (still haven’t) so it seems we were right to be wary. In any case, we signed the papers and put our deposit down on the new house today, and we move in starting next Wednesday.

I will take a few picture and post them soon.

Blog Facelift

I fiddled with the blog layout a bit and added some stuff. Haven’t decided if that cluttered it up too much, I’ll give it a few days and see how we like it…

Once again our firewall at work seems to have blocked access to my ISP’s servers. The web site is sorely overdue for an update but with the move and other things I am not sure when I will get to it. Anyone who has visited in the past couple of days might have noticed the main page is down right now. I should have that back up in the next few days.

Goldfish revived after car crash

Swiped this from Emmy’s Weblog:

A goldfish has cheated death, after being thrown 15 feet in a car crash on the M1 in Leicestershire…

I always knew that goldfish were pretty tough critters but that is pretty amazing.

Cripes! Another one

As far as blogs go, this is pretty boring stuff: no sharp political observations or timely commentary on current events here, just me (Chris) posting periodic updates for our friends and family on what is going on around here because I owe them all emails that I never get around to writing. I try to throw in a few weird links when I find them and the occasional rant, but otherwise there isn’t much of interest here, unless you know us.

Of course, since the site is crawled by search engines, we also tend to get visitors who stumble upon DogsnCatsnRats in their web wanderings; we’ve met some interesting people and overall that has been pretty cool…well, except for that vet who left the comment flaming me for something I’d said that apparently pushed his buttons. Having made kind of a hobby of looking at the site stats to see how many visitors have passed through and what led them here, which I posted about previously, I had finally gotten used to the huge spike in traffic this weblog generated when I posted about Keen Eddie being shown on Bravo, and kinda enjoyed reading all the comments — though I kept wondering why they were not being posted somewhere they would actually have an impact, like on a fansite or at Fox or Bravo.

For the past month or so “Keen Eddie” has been the #1 searched phrase that causes search engines to hit us, but suddenly there is a new contender. It is amazing how many people every day are apparently looking for ways to escape being called for jury duty, which I’d posted comment with a humorous link on that subject on a little while back. We’re talking hundreds of hits a day on this one, and I am thinking of maybe changing the text to make the search engines stop hitting it, or removing it entirely… it’s just a bit unnerving to have that much traffic coming through on that one. Of course that is mostly just my paranoid side speaking, which says “don’t draw attention to yourself from the government, even if you are just being a smartass, or they’ll find some reason to ship your butt back to Canada.”

I think I’ll go back and fiddle with the title of that post a bit to see if I can get Google to at least drop it down from #2 in the search results.

All sorts of stuff

We’ve had a lot of things going on the past week or so and posts to this weblog will probably be few and far between for the next few weeks. Wednesday came home last Monday and is doing great. Mojo was very sick that same day and had to be rushed to the vet with extreme diarrhea and vomiting, but he is feeling a lot better now too. We had a urinalysis done on Lilly and found out she has a raging urinary tract infection and possibly some kidney issues; after she finishes her three weeks of antibiotics she is going back for another urinalysis, this time with an additional urinary protein:creatinine (UPC) ratio test to check her kidney function. Luna’s tumor, sadly, continues to grow by leaps and bounds and she has two more inside her back legs. She’s still feeling pretty good and we are supplementing her with Nutrical (which she loves) but it’s only a matter of time before the cancer starts to weaken her. :-(

Big news is that we have been house-hunting for the past week and decided for sure to move. After the property inspection we got a new lease in the mail to sign, and we just didn’t want to be committed to another year here. In many ways the house is wonderful and we agonized over this decision, but in the end we decided that if we could find a place with cheaper rent and a better yard we would not sign the lease. I don’t want to jinx things here, as the lease is still pending on the new house, but as soon as it’s a ‘done deal’ I will post some pictures. We will both be closer to our jobs, the rent is a lot cheaper, the house is bright and airy and very charming. The yard is wonderful. On the downside, the house is even smaller than the one we are in now and we will no longer have a garage. But I think overall it is for the best. We’ll also be real close to white rock lake park – walking distance – which will be great for the dogs.

Ugh, I hate the thought of packing and moving again, though; I really hope this will be the last one for a long time!
