By Chris, on October 27, 2004, at 12:02 pm Can it PLEASE just get cold already? We’ve had temps in the ’80s and ’90s the past few weeks when it should be fall. I know that, at the very least, chiggers are inactive below sixty degrees and killed by temperatures below forty-two degrees, so if the weather would cool down there would at least be one less thing munching on me. I seem to be allergic to Texas mosquitos, every time I get bit I get a silver dollar sized 3-D red welt, that’s in addition to the chigger bites that last about a week or so and the fleas that occasionally snack on me when there isn’t a convenient animal around. I’m really looking forward to winter this year. I look like I have some weird skin disease with all the red blotches and hives.
We’re breaking down and putting Frontline on all the pets that it is safe for; we’ve been able to control it pretty well up until now with flea combs and vacuuming but they are finally getting the better of us. Mojo and Olive we’ll have to just keep combing, we don’t dare risk treating them with anything because of their health issues, and my hope is that all the fleas eventually hop on the treated pets and die. Not a big fan of Texas wildlife right now.
As an update to my previous post, I decided to go with my instincts and postponed that last test until I feel good and ready to take it. Since things have been crazy-busy at work this week and I’ve had very little time to study, that may not be for a few weeks yet…
By Chris, on October 13, 2004, at 12:03 pm I am studying for my third exam (I passed 70-290 yesterday) and once again facing the subnetting demon. I think I might have actually gotten it this time. I’m doing the sample exercises out of the book for calculating subnet address ranges and miracle of miracles, my answers match the book! Now if only I can get it to stay in my head.
I didn’t prepare nearly as well for my second exam as I did for my first, I wasn’t ready but took it anyway and it showed in my 742 score. The third exam is scheduled for Friday and I’d decided to postpone it for at least another two weeks, but the class instructor has suggested that, since the class includes free retakes, we should all just go ahead and try for it and if we flunk we can retake it. The mentality seems to be that a 700 (min. passing score) and a perfect 1000 both result in the same certificate and we should just shoot for a passing score.
I’m not sure how I feel about that, I like to wait until I have really learned the material in-depth and get the highest score I can. I know it all looks the same at the end, no one sees the score, but I am a lot prouder of my 936 I got on the XP exam than my server 2003 score. On the other hand, if I took 70-291 on Friday and managed to pass I’d have this all done and behind me… it feels like my brains are leaking out my ears at this point. Then I could just get some better books and learn it properly at my own pace.
I guess I’ll just cram as hard as I can the next two days and see how I score on a few Transcenders at the end of it, and decide then. Hey, if I can actually finally understand subnetting, maybe I’ll absorb the rest of it and actually be ready? (Yeah, and monkeys might fly out my butt)
By Chris, on October 13, 2004, at 11:44 am I snapped this picture of Lilly and Simon sharing a sunbeam in the living room this morning.
I am not sure in her current state how aware Lilly is of Simon — at least she managed not to lay right on him — but Simon seemed happy to have the company and gave her ear a few licks.

Subtitled ‘the neural net on the Internet’ this thing has beat me 3-0 so far. Mind you I picked fairly easy things like a blue jay, a lighter, and gold for it to guess, but it’s still kinda creepy.
By Chris, on October 6, 2004, at 5:20 pm OK, so I have no earthly idea how we got on the subject, I think it had something to do with hand sanitizer that had little colored blobs in it, but I ended up trying to explain Orbitz soda to my coworkers. No one here caught that bizarre little product during its brief life span, apparently. So off to Google I went…
First I spelled it wrong but came up with this amusing little blurb. Great, now I was scared to click on any of the other links for fear of hitting the disturbing link that guy mentioned. No, I am not repeating it here, previous experience has taught me that I will get a ton of very creepy web search hits to this blog from this point on if I do.
My wanderings then led me to Foods of the ’90s, where I learned how to spell it, and a new search led to this page dedicated to the weird icky drink with the floaters.
Somehow we jumped from that to Jolt Cola, which led me to ThinkGeek.com to prove you could still buy it, and an hour later I found myself looking at a Geekman action figure there, all productive work having ground to a halt way back when we first started the Orbitz discussion. Ah, the Internet… so many wasted hours of my life that I will never get back.
