By chris, on April 20, 2007, at 10:12 am Yet another ‘interesting’ week in the critterweb household; Joy decided to bathe the dogs on her day off, and when Maggie got out of the tub she shook herself like she usually does, except this time she somehow managed to whack her tail into either the cabinet or the toilet and split the end of it wide open! She then ran through the house, wagging her tail and spraying blood from floor to ceiling. Joy tried hard to get the bleeding to stop but by this point (with all the wagging and additional tail-beating) Maggie had managed to just about slide the end of her tail off. The split was by that point a huge gash and off to the vet they went.
I suppose this is my fault; after last month’s $500+ in animal-related spending, I had a big rant where I declared that no one else was going to the vet unless they were gushing blood from somewhere or had an eyeball hanging out. This definitely fit the former criteria. The vet had to put her under and stitch the tail, then sent her home with an elizabethan collar to keep her from tearing out the sutures and a bandage with a plastic casing on her tail. She has since just about destroyed her dewclaws and torn the backs of her ears to ribbons trying to remove the ecollar, has removed the collar three times and the bandage twice. The surgery cost us $232 plus probably another hundred or so once we’re done with all the rechecks and bandage changes over the next week or so. This is the sort of crap that just happens over and over, and why we’ll probably never be out of debt.
Poor Maggie has dealt pretty well with the whole thing… It wasn’t her fault it happened and not her fault she’s terrified of the plastic head collar, or that she has ongoing skin issues that have been pretty costly as well. If I sound frustrated, it’s just because it feels like no matter how hard we try, we just keep digging ourselves into a bigger and bigger hole.
By Chris, on March 26, 2007, at 10:05 am I sold one of my junk computers for $50 which enabled us to finally buy a wheelbarrow and some gardening supplies, and we spent most of this weekend working in our yard — which was a lot more fun than it sounds.
I don’t think I had gotten around to mentioning the ‘for sale’ sign that sprang up a few months ago beside our house. Apparently, a very large part of what we thought was our landlord’s property was actually an entirely separate piece of land… Not big enough to put a house on, but that is exactly what someone is apparently going to do. Because of this, we had to move our compost pile and are working trying to rescue as many of the plants from the little rock garden as we can before the area is bulldozed up. Joy took the rocks that were small enough to move and used them to edge the flowerbed and around the trees in the front yard.
We also sold a bunch of books and are going to put the money from that towards fencing in the back yard. First we’re taking down the nasty old metal shed in the yard because that is where our garden is going. The original place we were going to have it turned out to be on the other property. Oh well…
Anyway, in the midst of all the mowing, weed-eating, scrubbing, and re-arranging, I took a couple of pictures and have included them here.
By chris, on January 21, 2007, at 5:46 pm One of the cool things about Joy’s job is that the staff all takes turns bringing their dogs to work. Up until now, Cricket and Lindsy have been going (Cricket has a blast, believe it or not) but we didn’t think Maggie was quite ready… or rather that the store was not ready for the 45 pounds of pinball-like exuberance that is Maggie. Last week was pretty quiet at the store so we decided it was time to give it a try. We’re happy to report that the store is still standing…

Maggie and Lindsy at the store. Maggie is proudly wearing a fuchsia party collar with roses. The picture’s a bit small; Amy, who works with Joy, took it with a cell phone and sent it to us.

Maggie crashed after her big day.
By chris, on January 9, 2007, at 5:29 pm We actually had some snow that stuck to the ground, for a while anyway. It was all gone the next day.

Snow!

London Road

Brrrr! The white stuff is, uh, interesting. Can we go in now?
By chris, on November 5, 2006, at 1:50 pm We managed to capture all of the animals in just two photos, without having to ‘Photoshop’ anyone in after the fact.
Considering that the cats normally tend to avoid being within ten feet of each other, Maggie can’t sit still, and Cricket is about as hard to photograph as a hummingbird, that’s actually quite an accomplishment.

All four cats, clockwise from bottom left: Winter, Olive, Wednesday and Simon.

All three dogs, left to right: Maggie, Cricket, and Lindsy. Yes, there was food bribery involved.
